“I know that the world’s media is very sensitive to the issues surrounding refugees, particularly asylum seekers, and that the media have a duty to do a better job of reflecting this.”
News Corp Australia’s president, Peter Jackson, is expected to address the media on Tuesday.
Mr Jackson, a former editor of The Australian, is due to speak to a packed audience at the Sydney Opera House at 1pm.
He is scheduled to be joined by the ABC’s deputy news director, Peter O’Meara, and other members of the newsroom, who will be joined on stage by an independent executive producer.
News Corp and The Australian will also broadcast a panel discussion from 4pm.
It is expected that Mr Jackson will ask whether the media are too closely connected to the government and its political leaders, including the Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull.
Mr O’Connor, a member of the board of News Corp, is also expected to give a speech.
The panel will be followed by a Q&A session at 3pm.
The Australian’s editorial board and the managing editor, Stephen Gough, are expected to deliver the panel.
